Burns & McDonnell — Kansas City, Missouri

Minnesota Power Company Logo

Burns & McDonnell is a multi-disciplinary engineering, architectural, construction, and environmental services firm headquartered in Kansas City, Missouri. The firm has been in business more than 100 years, and has grown from a two man operation to an international firm with more than 1,700 employees.

Objective:
The initial goal was to improve plotting productivity. Recently, the senior management at Burns & McDonnell suggested that the CAD team review other plotting solutions to ensure that they were using the best possible product.

Solution:
Burns & McDonnell began using Plot Station® more than 12 years ago to increase personnel productivity by offloading plot processing from individual workstations to a dedicated plot processor.

Over the years the plotting environment changed as Burns & McDonnell added other CAD software packages and newer printers and plotters. In response to management's request, the CAD Team performed a careful review of a variety of products, and the decision was made to stay with Plot Station. Just as their needs had changed over the years, so had Plot Station. Along with Plot Station's many new features, Burns & McDonnell appreciated the fact that the product remained "CAD and hardware neutral."

These are some of the Plot Station features that the CAD team at Burns & McDonnell find beneficial for their plotting needs:

Supports a wide variety of input file formats. This is particularly important at Burns & McDonnell because they use both AutoCAD and MicroStation CAD applications. Plot Station provides a common interface no matter which software application is used. Users are assured of standard, consistent output. With more than 300 users plotting hundreds of drawings each day, it is critical that plots are consistent no matter which software application or output device is used.

Offers output drivers for virtually every printer and plotter on the market today. Burns & McDonnell liked the fact that Plot Station is a "neutral" product that is not aligned with any specific printer or CAD software vendor, unlike some other plotting solutions on the market. eQuorum works with all of the major plotter vendors so that Plot Station can support new devices as they are introduced.

Lets users mix a variety of file formats within one plot set.
Burns & McDonnell users can create plot sets with a mix of AutoCAD and MicroStation files as well as other raster formats and Adobe PDF.

Plot Station's DataTracker accounting helps capture and track information for accurate project billing.
Plot Station has numerous integration points that helped Burns & McDonnell integrate it with their own robust accounting system. This gives them the ability to easily capture the specific data that they need for accurate client billing.
