eQuorum Releases ImageSite® Digital Signature′

New Module Provides Assurance Of Signer Identity And Content Integrity

ATLANTA, GEORGIA - October 3, 2002 - eQuorum Corporation announces the availability of Digital Signature, an optional ImageSite module that lets authorized users digitally sign documents or markups to ensure authenticity and content. A digital signature on a document or markup stored in the ImageSite repository is an assurance to other ImageSite users that the document or its content has not changed since it was signed.

A digital signature is an encrypted code that is attached to a computer-generated drawing or document that uniquely identifies and confirms the signer. Unlike a written signature, it is difficult to forge a digital signature. The ImageSite server also places a time and date stamp as well as any comments along with the digital signature. Using this server-based time and date stamp overcomes one of the security flaws of client-based digital signature solutions, which don't prevent someone from changing the time and date on a local computer, thereby leaving the integrity of the digital signature in question.

"Compared to paper documents, computer-generated documents are more susceptible to modification that could be hard to detect," comments Frank D. Bouchard, vice president of sales and marketing at eQuorum. "Using ImageSite's Digital Signature module provides another layer of assurance that is essential in today's highly collaborative business environment."

Bouchard goes on to explain that while using ImageSite's Digital Signature is quick and simple, the underlying technology is extremely sophisticated. "In addition to ImageSite's proprietary technology, we use Microsoft's CryptoAPI infrastructure for public and private encryption keys. Together, this technology provides three levels of assurance. First, it validates the signer's identity. Next, the user can see that the document has not changed, either intentionally or accidentally, since it was signed. Finally, the Digital Signature module provides the assurance of a valid, authentic signature."

Bouchard also points out another benefit of the Digital Signature module. "The Digital Signature module leverages the advanced document distribution technologies within ImageSite to eliminate the security risk associated with using e-mail for document distribution. E-mail itself offers little security as messages can be intercepted or easily forwarded to unauthorized individuals. ImageSite uses an extremely simple, yet highly secure document distribution strategy in which the user e-mails a message with a URL to the desired documents stored in the ImageSite repository. This method not only keeps all ImageSite password security models in place, but the document never leaves the ImageSite repository."

ImageSite's Digital Signature module also offers these features:

  • Manages signing passwords for users with signing privileges within a project

  • Enables authorized signers to sign one or multiple documents as well as native files and markups

  • Allows multiple signers on a single document or markup

  • Includes date and time stamp as well as any comments with each digital signature

  • Uses a combination of advanced technologies, including encryption and server-based time stamps, to support the legal concept of nonrepudation. Nonrepudiation is the ability to ensure that a signer can not deny the authenticity of their signature or the act of signing.

ImageSite lets users anywhere in the world store, retrieve, review, mark up, collaborate with, and print a broad range of technical documents throughout the lifecycle of any project or product. ImageSite is a Java application that has the look and feel of a "thick client" software product. The authorized user needs only a standard Web browser to access drawings in the ImageSite repository.

ImageSite is licensed by the number of concurrent users or by the number of documents to be stored in the ImageSite repository. ImageSite and Digital Signature are available directly from eQuorum, or through authorized partners including Xerox Engineering Systems. Free tryouts of ImageSite are available at http://online.equorum.com.
